Flag Raising at the Trasimene Heritage Walk
October 21, 2020
On October 1, the community of Currie gathered safely in the heart of Alexandria Park for the grand unveiling of the new bike and walking path that is now part of the historic Trasimene Heritage Walk.
Trasimene Heritage Walk
The Trasimene Heritage Walk is a tribute to the Canadians who have bravely served our country in military conflicts, and honours Currie’s rich military history. The walk was originally named after a significant World War II battle near Lake Trasimene. Located in Tuscany, the Trasimene Line was a German defensive position that the Allies were able to penetrate, ultimately forcing the Germans out of Italy. This became a significant victory for the Allies. Three divisions of Canada’s First Armoured Brigade, including the Calgary, Ontario and Three Rivers regiments, received the Trasimene Line battle honour.
The historic Trasimene Heritage Walk is recognized by the Government of Alberta as a Provincial Heritage asset, and has been preserved as a key part of Currie’s redevelopment.
Our Inaugural Flag Raising
During the unveiling, Canada Lands Company held a small, physically distanced flag raising ceremony with key stakeholders, CLC staff and one lucky Currie family, winner of a contest open to Currie residents. Chosen at random from all the entries, the Ranasinghe family were part of this historic event, and were given the opportunity to raise the Canadian flag for the first time on Trasimene Heritage Walk. They also won a gift certificate to the newly opened Flanders’ Fine Food at the Inn on Officers’ Garden.
We invite folks from around the city to come visit Trasimene Heritage Walk, take in all of the historic stories and signage along the Walk (some are soon to be unveiled), and see how the community of Currie is growing.
