Burwood Distillery Moves to Currie
September 22, 2021
Some exciting news for craft spirit lovers or anyone looking for a friendly place to hang out—Burwood Distillery is growing, and their new home is right here in Currie.
Who is Burwood Distillery?
Burwood Distillery describes themselves as a “beloved Calgary spirits producer that specializes in unique honey liqueurs, novel whisky, and award-winning spirits.” They occupy the space where the rich heritage of craft distilling meets one-of-a-kind Alberta agriculture.
“We are all about crafting connections and distilling memories!”
Their spirits highlight local ingredients from family farms, including unpasteurized honey from the Cilic family honey farm and local Alberta premium two-row malt barley. They pride themselves on using traditional distillation techniques and old-school attention to detail.
Finding a New Home in Currie
Staying true to their intention of marrying craft distilling with Albertan flavours, the Burwood team looked for a home that would bring together a sense of heritage with an Albertan flair. Currie fit the bill perfectly.
The Stables Building was built in 1936 to accommodate 100 horses as part of Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) Regiment. The high ceilings and large windows that the military enjoyed back then now provide a bright and welcoming space for Burwood Distillery. Today, the interior design is styled after old-world Eastern European and Scottish farm distilleries.
“When we came across the Stables Building in our commercial real estate search, we knew this was going to be our next permanent home.”
In addition to offering a blend of history and contemporary comforts, Currie provided a sense of community that is equally as important to Burwood. Currie is a vibrant community with a sense of neighbourly welcoming. The distillery hopes to provide a community gathering space for visitors, and finding a warm, friendly neighbourhood to call home was their first step.
Repurposing the Stables Building
Also known by its military name, Building D4, this historic building is being revitalized with a new purpose: hosting Calgary locals and visitors alike over excellent drinks. For Burwood, this is an enormous leap from 5,000 sq. ft. to over 16,000 sq. ft. Not only does this growth give them the opportunity to expand their production, storage, and other functional aspects of their distillery business, it also provides even more space where they can host visitors.
“Currie Stables Building (D4) truly supports our growth, innovation, and dream to enrich the lives of everyone who visits us.”
Burwood has big plans for the space. In addition to a regular menu of beverages and food pairings, the team plans to offer what they call “experience and education” opportunities, including gin and whisky classes, facility tours, and spirit tastings. In the future, they hope to be one of Calgary’s premiere tourism destinations, putting prairie ingredients on the map and creating a second-to-none experience right here in Currie. Their new home will be open to the public in spring/summer of 2022, and they can’t wait to open their doors.
