Breaking ground on a new Alexandria Park
October 31, 2019
Construction has begun on the exciting new additions to Alexandria Park. Today you can find plenty of green space and the popular Airport Playground on a mature landscape that dates back to the 1930s. Thanks to extensive input from Currie residents and surrounding community members, Currie will soon be home to the kind of park that people from all over the city flock to year-round.
The Currie Bark Park
Bring your four-legged friends to the park every day of the week to enjoy this urban off-leash space with playful props suited for all types of dogs. You’ll find it at the corner of Normandy Drive and Quesnay Wood when the park opens in 2020.
The Amphitheatre, Great Lawn, and City Viewpoint
The amphitheatre and great lawn will be your front-row tickets to outdoor fun in the spring and summer when special events, celebrations and markets come to Currie. Built into the green space will be terraced seating for lounging comfortably and more than enough room for sports and fitness events like yoga sessions and volleyball across the park. You’ll also find a striking concrete viewing platform to take in inspiring views of Calgary’s downtown all year.
Skating Rink and Sled Slope
When the temperatures drop and the snow starts flying you can still spend hours outdoors on the leisure skating rink in the heart of the park. On the south side of the park, your young ones can enjoy the beginner sledding hill. Construction on the toboggan hill and skating rink will begin in 2020.
Splash Park, Rain Gardens, and Currie Woodland
Sure to be the busiest place in Currie come summertime, the splash park will feature enough space for plenty of kids in the neighbourhood to cool off and splash around. It will be easy to spend the whole day at the park thanks to the shade provided by mature trees throughout.
The Currie rain gardens will feature a wooden walkway for leisurely strolls next to the lush flowers and foliage. The design of the garden area helps enhance the growth of plants by funnelling rainwater into strategic areas for it to pool and feed the entire garden. Construction on the splash park and rain gardens will begin in 2020.
The Currie Woodland and exercise loop will be your natural oasis in the spring, summer, winter and fall with heavily wooded trails for walking and running.
